Experience
I have a PhD in Organic Chemistry, an MBA in Healthcare Economics, and a Masters Degree in Finance. I have taught College and University level courses in several subjects for over ten years. The courses I have taught at the University/College level include: Inorganic Chemistry; Organic Chemistry; Nursing Chemistry; and Laboratory Techniques. Additionally, I have tutored students ranging from the 8th grade through to graduate-level students in a variety of subjects. The subjects I am available to tutor include a variety of courses in Mathematics; Science (especially Chemistry); Statistics; and several other subjects. Note that the specific subjects that I am qualified to teach or tutor are listed here in my University Tutor profile. See the "Preferred Subjects" section in my profile. TEACHING PHILOSOPHY By Gary Plourde II, Ph.D. “Education is a social process…Education is growth…Education is, not a preparation for life; Education is life itself.” -John Dewey The sentiment expressed by these words describes how I feel about teaching and learning. Life is about using what you learn to help you in new situations throughout life. For this reason, I teach with a high level of energy and enthusiasm as a tool to heighten the students’ attention and learning. This excitement comes from my desire to increase the students' awareness that math and chemistry, though both may be very challenging subjects, are also fun and exciting. Most of the students I have had the pleasure of interacting with have been pre-medicine or non-chemistry majors and to see them understand (and perhaps even enjoy) math or chemistry for even a second is worth all the effort. The most rewarding aspect of teaching is to watch a student understand an idea or a concept all of a sudden. I have had the opportunity to observe many professors and their teaching styles. With these in mind, along with my teaching experiences, I have developed a teaching style and philosophy of my own. I believe that a student should learn math or chemistry in two ways: 1) from a mechanistic point of view which allows a student to develop logical thinking and problem solving skills which can be applied to areas other than the subject being taught; 2) in an environment that is stimulating by providing real life examples of the subject-matter, thereby demonstrating to them that math and chemistry are not just nebulous concepts they read about in a book, but are actually concepts found everywhere around them in real life. To me, a great scholar is one that has the ability to constantly adapt their methods to the situations that present themselves. These scholars remember that they are assisting with the development of their students as a person and helping them to attain their goals in life. I believe mathematics and chemistry, although nebulous subjects, are educational tools which help students grow -- and this experience should be challenging, fun, and most of all rewarding. - Dr. Gary Plourde Visit my tutoring profile: http://tinyurl.com/DrGary-Tutors-Math-or-Science
