Rachel F.
Private tutor in Gaithersburg, MD
Education
I have a B.A. in English with a concentration in Professional Writing & Rhetoric. I graduated Elon University (in North Carolina) in 2015 with a 3.95 GPA. I am a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies. Much of my undergraduate experience was colored with leadership positions in the service center, and I volunteered for a variety of on- and off-campus organizations and social justice non-profits.
Experience
I'm an enthusiastic tutor who loves empowering students to find their inner skills and enjoy learning (or at least not make it as scary!). There’s nothing like the moment when it “clicks” for a student - whether that’s understanding how to structure an essay, solve a Math equation, or properly punctuate a sentence. I want to help students effectively tackle those difficult-to-start or strenuous-to-complete English, Math and Reading assignments. My collaborative tutoring style empowers students to not only complete tasks but also gain lasting knowledge and improve their confidence. I am skilled at tutoring students of all ages. Whether you're looking for a tutor to help your elementary school child learn how to construct a sentence, teach your middle school child how to solve math problems or work with your high school student to structure an essay, I can provide valuable guidance and support. Through my degree in Professional Writing & Rhetoric, I’ve learned how to not only effectively write but also how to think through the entirety of the writing process and the tutoring process. I worked as a Writing Center Associate at my university, helping college students improve their writing skills. I’ve also intensely tutored high school students struggling in English and Math. Through my service year as an AmeriCorps VISTA, I developed curriculum to teach basic reading and writing in after-school programs to kids in elementary and middle school. I've continued volunteering to help elementary and middle schoolers learn to enjoy reading. In terms of tutoring SAT writing, I can use my expertise that allowed me to get a 770 to benefit students. I am easy-going and patient, but I'm not afraid to give the "push" that students struggling to motivate themselves need.

Hobbies
For the past few years, I've been working in the social service non-profit space and volunteering with after-school tutoring programs. Volunteering has always been a passion of mine, from working to empower survivors of domestic violence to tutoring at-risk youth. In my free time, I am usually outside hiking or skiing (depending on the season), taking in all the DC-area museums, or testing my coffee knowledge at local coffee shops.
