Experience

I have lots of previous experience tutoring students from first grade through college - mostly in writing. I have also had experience working with students for whom English is not their first language. Specifically I have worked with a Korean-speaking family (2 girls) in English writing, Literature, History, Social Studies, Spelling, Religion, some beginner Spanish, and basic Algebra. I also helped a Vietnamese girl with her reading and writing in English. Another one of my favorite students was a 5th grader who I worked with for a year in writing. When I started working with him, it would take two hours to complete one paragraph. I worked with him on his confidence in his own intelligence and writing ability as well as some concrete skills in the writing process. By the end of the year, he was writing paragraphs on his own in less than twenty minutes, as well as full five paragraph essays with little to no guidance from me, and receiving the highest marks in his class in English, which was his least favorite subject. My students have not only received higher marks on their next exam; they were awarded certificates at the end of the year for earning the highest grade in their class. I absolutely love to tutor, because the relationships formed are so special and so strong. I tutored one girl in particular during her 8th and 9th grade years, I always looked forward to going to work in the evenings because we often talked about more than just school work. I really felt like I was able to be something of a role model, and an older sister to guide her. It's always exciting to see someone grow and improve; and rewarding, moreover, knowing that you were the one who helped them do it! I recently graduated Cum Laude, and Phi Beta Kappa from UC San Diego with a B.A. in Sociology - emphasis in Law and Society. I am a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Golden Key International Honors Society. My SAT scores are as follows: SAT Subject Test Literature 660 Mathematics Level 2 550 SAT Reasoning Test Critical Reading 670 Math 630 Writing 650 English, writing, and general humanities not only my favorite subjects, but also my best. I have often been told I have a talent for the written word. I am an enthusiastic, upbeat, and hard-working person, and I love people!

Hobbies

Studies are important, but a life of balance is best. I enjoy surfing, movie nights, video games, singing, softball, soccer, photography, musicals, all things Disney, and hanging with my friends and making new ones. I currently work as a Sommelier in San Luis Obispo County which I thoroughly enjoy. I also lead a weekly wine study group for my colleagues.
