Education

Earned PhD in English and Comparative Literature from the University of Cincinnati, and specialized in Creative Writing, The History of the Novel, and 20th Century American Gothic Literature. Earned MFA in Creative Writing from Western Michigan University, and specialized in Fiction Writing. Earned BA from Augustana College, and majored in English, minored in Art History and Philosophy.

Experience

I am an award-winning writer, and have been teaching Composition, Honors Composition, Fiction Writing and Literature at the university level for the last nine years. Through my years as an instructor, I've seen many students through the application process, and on to graduate school. I've also assisted my writing students in getting published in top-ranking literary journals. I deeply enjoy the time I spend with students one-on-one and often remain a mentor to them years after I've had them in the classroom. In my years as a writing professional, I've worked with Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winners. I've presented on several panels and given readings at the annual conference of the Association for Writers and Writing Programs. While in Cincinnati, I volunteered as an after-school tutor at WordPlay Cincinnati, a nonprofit creative writing center, and led workshops for high school students.

Hobbies

When I'm not reading or writing, I love taking the dog for long walks, or hiking with friends. I practice yoga as often as I can. I see travel as something necessary, and love to find new places and to visit family. I consider myself a bit of a baker. I very much enjoy seeing what new opportunities this area has to offer.
