Jeffrey T.
Private tutor in Richmond, VA
Education
Contact: terryjm@vcu.edu In May 2013, I earned a Master of Teaching Degree in Biology at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and I am excited and passionate about continuing my career in tutoring and education. In December 2011, I earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from VCU. An interesting fact about me is that I did not always know that I wanted to tutor, yet, throughout my years at VCU, I found myself seeking opportunities to tutor. Additionally, I am a proficient Spanish-speaker and I am working toward total fluency as a life-goal. I studied Spanish abroad in Bolivia and Peru in 2006 which was my first (and most special) interaction and immersion with a culture apart from my own culture. I am proficient in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Prezi, Exam View, and I have experience using Adobe Photoshop, and iMovie.

Employer: Richmond, VA Supervisor: Stephanie Jefferson, 804.447.4095 Responsibilities: Meet with students one-on-one to provide instruction tailored to students’ individual needs. June 2011 to June 2012 Position: Camp Counselor Location: The Mary and Frances Youth Center Employer: Virginia Commonwealth University Manager: Christina Carter, 804-827-0802 Responsibilities: The Mary and Frances Youth Center offers programs for youth with tennis instruction at its core. As a camp counselor, I was responsible for tutoring and mentoring Richmond city’s and surrounding counties’ youth while building teamwork, sportsmanship, and discipline both in the classroom and on the tennis court. I also designed and implemented science lessons when we had extra time. One in particular that I am proud of was my lesson on combustion. November 2010 to June 2011 Position: GED Helpline Assistant and Archive Assistant Location: The Virginia Adult Learning and Resource Center Employer: Virginia Commonwealth University Manager: George Bailey, 540- 831-6207 Responsibilities: I was responsible for archiving test scores for elementary schools under the SEELS Grant. Under another grant, the PEELS Grant, I was responsible for communicating with the learners over the phone, via the internet, and through personalized mailings. January 2010 to May 2010 Position: Teaching Assistant for “Evolution of the Angiosperms” Location: VCU Department of Biology Employer: Virginia Commonwealth University Manager: Dr. Joanna Padolina, 804-828-1562 Responsibilities: I was required to attend each lecture and provide supplemental instruction to college-aged students in after-class study sessions planned by me. Oftentimes, I would assist Dr. Padolina in editing tests and in writing test items. I made myself available to students via email to answer questions and to schedule appointments for additional tutoring. I was responsible for assisting Dr. Padolina in assigning activities and homework and for grading portions of the students’ examinations as well as posting study material to Blackboard and uploading grades into excel. November 2009 to October 2010 Position: Research Assistant Location: Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology, MCV Campus Employer: Virginia Commonwealth University Manager: Dr. Andrew K. Ottens; 804. 628. 2972 Responsibilities: Research is certainly not for everyone, but I could never seem to get enough. Given the proper tools and real human dilemmas, I found myself thinking more creatively than ever before and using problem-solving skills I did not even know I possessed as a result of my experience in the lab. As part of Ottens’ research team, I was responsible for collecting data to temporally and spatially profile the onset and duration of Caspase 3 which is the effector protease of cellular apoptosis. In other words, I used injured rat brain samples to determine the quantity and time period within which proteins that cause brain damage are released following brain injury. In October 2010, I presented a poster on which I was named first author depicting my contribution to the teams’ research at the VCU Undergraduate Research Symposium. My lab training certifies me with the following skills: tissue harvesting and maceration, protein assaying, gel electrophoresis, Western immunoblotting, protein immunoblotting and incubation, and chemiluminescense development and imaging. March 2007 to March 2008 Position: Tutor Location: Thompson Middle School, and Lucille Brown Middle School, Richmond, Virginia Employer: Richmond Public Schools Manager: Sharelle Noel; 804.513.6710 Responsibilities: As a trained tutor, I taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Math and English with the program Project Best. This program was designed to help students pass the SOL who were unlikely to pass the SOL based on their grades in their core subjects and/or had already failed the SOL. Simply teaching the material is not an accurate description of my time spent as a Project Best Tutor. Oftentimes, I was responsible for 10+ students who were not prepared for classroom instruction and who were not invested in learning/did not view passing the SOL as an investment and/or requirement. Adapting pre-set lesson plans to the ever-changing individual students’ needs was my daily challenge. The majority of my family members are teachers, and I have found that teaching is something for which I have a passion – teaching comes naturally to me. I was admired by my students and I admired them too. Over the almost three years I spent with Richmond Public Schools, I became close with my students, saw some of them from 6th to 8th grade, and watched them grow both academically and emotionally. Oftentimes my students would beg and fight to go to tutoring, even if they didn’t need it anymore. Our data demonstrated that the program worked, that our team’s instruction was being implemented successfully, and that without the program students were less likely to pass the SOL.
